Getting through prefilled pods faster than you feel you should be is one of the most common frustrations among pod kit users in the UK. If a pod is supposed to deliver 6,000 puffs and you are getting 3,000, something is going wrong. Sometimes the culprit is the device or the pod itself, but more often it comes down to a small number of habits that are easy to identify and straightforward to change.
These tips apply across all the major prefilled pod kits available in the UK, whether you are using an Elf Bar 600, a Hayati Pro Max Plus 6000, an IVG 2400, a Vaporesso Dojo Blast, a Lost Mary BM6000, or any other device in our range. None of them require any special equipment or products. Just a small adjustment to how you use and store the device.
1. Stop Chain Vaping
Chain vaping is the single most common cause of shortened pod life and the leading cause of that unpleasant burnt taste from a pod that still has liquid in it. Chain vaping means taking back-to-back draws with little or no gap in between.
Here is what happens inside the pod when you do this. The coil heats up with each draw. When you take the next draw before the coil has cooled slightly and before the cotton wick has had time to re-saturate with fresh liquid from the pod, the coil heats partially dry or fully dry cotton. Dry cotton scorches very quickly. Once that scorch is there, the burnt taste is present for the rest of the pod's life regardless of how much liquid remains.
The fix is straightforward. Wait 20 to 30 seconds between draws. That small pause allows the wick to pull fresh liquid from the pod into the coil area. It feels like an unnecessarily long wait at first, but it becomes habit quickly and makes a material difference to both pod longevity and flavour consistency.
2. Prime Every New Pod
When you insert a brand-new pod into your device for the first time, the cotton wick inside it is completely dry. Taking a full draw immediately forces the coil to heat dry cotton before it has had any chance to absorb the liquid. This is the fastest route to a burnt wick, often within the first five draws of a new pod.
The solution is to prime the pod before first use. After clicking a new pod into the device, wait a minimum of three minutes before taking your first draw. If you have time, five minutes is better. This gives the wick time to absorb liquid through the pod's internal wicking ports via capillary action. For pods with higher-viscosity liquid, you can also take two or three very gentle draws without triggering the device, essentially drawing air through the mouthpiece to help pull liquid into the wick faster.
3. Store the Device Upright
The wick inside a prefilled pod relies partly on gravity to maintain its saturation with e-liquid. Storing your device on its side or upside down interferes with this and can cause uneven wicking, leading to dry hits even when the pod is not empty.
Keep your device upright whenever it is not being actively used. On a desk, in a bag, in a car cupholder: upright is always better. It also reduces the chance of the pod leaking, which wastes liquid and can cause the device contacts to get sticky over time.
4. Keep It Away from Heat and Direct Sunlight
E-liquid viscosity is temperature sensitive. High temperatures thin the liquid, which can cause it to flow through the pod's wicking system too fast and pool in areas of the pod or atomiser head where it cannot be effectively vaporised. This leads to leaking, gurgling, and spitting, all of which waste liquid. Very cold temperatures have the opposite effect: the liquid thickens and wicks slowly, which can result in dry hits even when the pod has plenty of liquid.
The practical rules are simple. Do not leave your vape device in a car on a hot day. Keep it away from direct sunlight on a windowsill. Do not vape immediately after bringing a device in from the cold: give it 10 to 15 minutes to reach room temperature. Room temperature storage and use is the sweet spot for every prefilled pod kit.
5. Draw Gently Rather Than Hard
More suction does not mean more vapour on a draw-activated pod kit. Most prefilled devices are designed around a gentle, steady mouth-to-lung draw, not a forceful pull. The airflow sensor triggers on relatively light airflow, and the coil's heating profile is calibrated for a measured draw speed.
A hard, aggressive draw does two things that reduce pod life. First, it can pull excess liquid into the airway, causing flooding and gurgling, which wastes liquid and can damage the coil if the excess liquid pools around it. Second, it can pull air through the coil faster than the liquid can vaporise properly, reducing the quality of each puff and encouraging you to draw again sooner.
Slow and steady draws, held in the mouth briefly before inhaling to the lungs, produce better flavour, more satisfying nicotine delivery, and consistently longer pod life.

6. Do Not Drain the Pod to the Absolute Last Drop
Every prefilled pod has a point near the end of its life where the liquid level is so low that the wick can no longer stay fully saturated between draws. This is the zone where most burnt-pod experiences happen. You will usually notice a change in the character of the vapour: it becomes slightly thinner, the flavour shifts subtly, or the draw becomes noticeably easier than usual.
When you notice any of these signals, swap the pod. The difference in liquid remaining at that point is minimal, and the cost of a scorched wick is the full flavour quality of the new pod you will insert next, because if the coil continues to burn dry it can sometimes affect how the device heats subsequent pods.
7. Keep the Device Contacts Clean
The connection points between the pod and the device body can accumulate small amounts of e-liquid residue over time. This is particularly common on devices where pods are swapped frequently or where the pod has leaked slightly. A dirty connection causes inconsistent power delivery from the battery to the coil, which produces inconsistent heating and can reduce both vapour quality and coil life.
A quick wipe of the connection pins on the device body with a dry cotton bud every one to two weeks is sufficient maintenance for most users. Do this when you change pods and it becomes part of the natural routine.
8. Match Your Liquid Viscosity to Your Device
This applies mainly to vapers who use refillable pod devices alongside prefilled kits. If you refill pods manually, using a 70/30 VG/PG shortfill in a low-power pod device designed for 50/50 liquid will cause chronic wicking problems. The thick 70/30 liquid cannot flow through the narrow wicking channels fast enough to keep the coil saturated between draws.
For refillable pod devices: always check the manufacturer's recommended VG/PG ratio. For prefilled pod kits: this is not a concern because the pods are pre-filled with the correct formulation by the manufacturer. If you are using only prefilled kits, you can ignore this tip entirely.
When a Pod Is Simply Done
Even with all of the above practices in place, pods have a finite life. When the flavour turns consistently burnt or muted despite drawing gently, waiting between puffs, and having confirmed the device is charged and at room temperature, the pod is done. Replace it.
We stock replacement pods for every device we sell at Vape Desires. If you vape regularly, buying replacement pods in pairs or small multipacks works out cheaper per pod than buying individually, and means you are never caught short.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Why does my new pod taste burnt after only a few puffs?
The most likely cause is that the pod was not primed before first use. When a new pod is inserted, the cotton wick is dry. Taking a draw immediately scorches the cotton before it has absorbed the liquid. Always wait 3 to 5 minutes after inserting a new pod before your first draw. If it still tastes burnt, the pod may have been stored in high heat or the device contacts may need cleaning.
-
How many puffs should I realistically expect from a pod?
Manufacturer puff counts are based on standard 1.5-second draws in controlled conditions. Real-world usage typically produces 60 to 80 percent of the stated puff count for most vapers. A pod rated at 6,000 puffs will realistically deliver 3,600 to 4,800 puffs for a moderate vaper. Longer draw lengths and more frequent vaping reduce the count further.
-
My pod is making a gurgling noise. What does that mean?
Gurgling usually means excess liquid has entered the airway of the pod, typically caused by drawing too hard or by the device being stored on its side. Try taking a very gentle draw to clear the airway. If it persists, remove the pod, gently blow through the mouthpiece end with the pod removed to clear excess liquid from the device chimney, then reinsert.
-
Can I store pods out of the device to make them last longer?
Yes, keeping unused pods stored separately from the device, in a cool dark place and upright, preserves the liquid quality and prevents premature degradation of the coil. Once a pod has been inserted and used, storing it upright in the device or separately both work. Avoid leaving a partially used pod out of the device for extended periods as the e-liquid in the wick can dry.
-
Is it worth buying replacement pods in bulk to save money?
For regular vapers, yes. Buying replacement pods in multipacks typically saves money per pod compared to single purchases, and ensures you always have a replacement ready. At Vape Desires, free delivery on orders over £30 means a multipack order often reaches the free delivery threshold on its own.
